Property and environmental health

Protect drinking water and maintain a healthy home

Private wells and septic systems require owner attention. Lead, radon, standing water and pest conditions may also create health concerns. Contact the Health Office before regulated work and use certified professionals when required.

  • Private wellsTest routinely through a certified laboratory

NJDEP recommends at least annual testing for total coliform bacteria, nitrates and pH, with additional contaminants tested on the State's schedule. NWBRHC offers homeowner testing by appointment, but its program does not satisfy a Private Well Testing Act real-estate transaction.

  • Sales and rentalsPrivate Well Testing Act requirements

Covered property sales require testing of untreated well water and review of the results before closing. Covered rental properties must be tested at least once every five years, and the landlord must provide the results to tenants. Use an NJDEP-certified laboratory and follow the official transaction process.

  • Children and housingPrevent lead exposure

New Jersey requires health-care providers to test children at 12 and 24 months, or as soon as possible before age 6 when those tests were missed. Contact the child's health-care professional or NWBRHC about testing and follow-up.

  • Indoor airTest every home for radon

Radon cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, and levels vary from home to home. NJDEP recommends testing every home. Use a New Jersey-certified test kit, measurement business or mitigation professional.

Septic-system care essentials

Local health approval and other permits may be required before a septic system is installed, altered, repaired or abandoned. Contact the Saddle River Health Office and septic administrative authority before contracting or beginning work.

  1. Confirm approvals first

Ask which health, engineering, plumbing, construction or other reviews apply. A contractor proposal or payment is not municipal approval.

  2. Protect the disposal area

Keep vehicles, paving, structures and excess surface water away from the tank and disposal field. Do not alter grading or drainage without review.

  3. Control what enters

Conserve water and keep wipes, grease, chemicals, medicine and other harmful materials out of the system. Use the Borough medication drop box for accepted medicines.

  4. Maintain records

Retain plans, permits, inspection reports, maintenance and pumping records. Ask a qualified professional about a property-specific maintenance schedule.

Septic resources: Review NWBRHC water and septic information and Rutgers septic-system maintenance guidance. Contact Environmental Health at 201-327-2609, extension 234 before regulated work.

Oil, chemical or hazardous release: Call 911 first if anyone is in immediate danger. For an urgent New Jersey environmental release or wildlife concern, call 1-877-WARNDEP (1-877-927-6337) and follow NJDEP reporting guidance.
